Ingredients
  

For the Beans

  • 6 cups water (for boiling)
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 5 cups red or pinto beans

For the Base

  • 1 pound peeled and cubed batata (sweet potato)
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 can (13.5 ounces) coconut milk
  • 1 can (24 ounces) evaporated milk
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ can condensed milk

For the Flavoring

  • 8 whole cloves
  • ½ cup raisins
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For Serving

  • 6 ounces (1.5 packets) small round milk crackers

Instructions
 

Prepare the Beans

  • Soak beans overnight, then drain and cook in 6 cups water with 1 cinnamon stick for 45-60 minutes until soft.
  • Blend 2 cups cooked beans with 1 cup milk and 1 cup water until smooth. Strain into a pot, adding ½ cup reserved whole beans and mashing slightly.

Cook the Batata

  • Boil cubed batata in water for 15 minutes until slightly tender. Drain and set aside.

Finish the Habichuelas con Dulce

  • Add sugar, coconut milk, evaporated milk, condensed milk, salt, cinnamon sticks, cloves, raisins, and batata to the bean mixture. Simmer over medium-low heat for 20-25 minutes, stirring gently.

Serve & Enjoy

  • Ladle into bowls, top with milk crackers, and enjoy warm or chilled. A comforting Dominican classic best shared with family and friends!
